Abstract

This article examines how the Paraguayan War was visually represented through illustrated press and lithographic collections in nineteenth-century Brazil, particularly the Quadros históricos da guerra do Paraguai series. Based on visual culture and the mechanisms of national discourse production, it argues that such imagery integrated an imperial pedagogy aimed at legitimizing Brazil as a civilized nation in the Southern Cone context. By confronting History education and colonial legacies, the article offers a critical reflection on the limits of symbolic inclusion and the challenges of an intercultural approach to History learning in Latin America.

Author Biography

  • Álvaro Saluan da Cunha, Universidade Federal Fluminense -UFF, Niterói/RJ, Brasil

    Historian, researcher, and teacher at the Municipal Department of Education of Juiz de Fora, he holds a Ph.D. in History from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF). His research focuses on the analysis of visual and editorial representations of the war against Paraguay in the 19th century, particularly in Brazilian lithographic productions and illustrated press, with emphasis on works such as Quadros Históricos da Guerra do Paraguai and the contributions of Henrique Fleiuss and Angelo Agostini. His academic background also includes a master's degree and undergraduate studies in History and Social Sciences from UFJF, an exchange program at the University of Porto, and involvement in extension projects, historical archives, and history education, with an emphasis on the intersection of memory, art, and political discourse in the Brazilian Empire.
